With Surf Guru, we are taking the project to a new level

A key principle in our campaign to restore First Peak is our proactive approach to environmental monitoring. Surf Guru is our technology partner making wave monitoring efforts possible. In the context of restoring a surfing wave, monitoring refers to a systematic, on-going effort to document the need to restore First Peak. Monitoring takes place before and during any coastal project make help insure the project’s success. Once First Peak returns, monitoring would continue well into the future to guarantee the wave’s success.

Here’s how the First Peak Project Monitoring Contest works.
1. Visit our page First Peak Surf Alerts and sign up to receive text messages on days there are waves.
2. Go to the Surf Guru page and take screenshots using there camera app. There’s a button in the right to snap a screenshot and save it to your computer.
3. Upload your monitoring pictures to the First Peak Photo Contest every month.

You can help make the First Peak Project happen

We are looking for users like you to help us take pictures of the waves at First Peak. Here’s a list of the things we’re looking for in the photos.

Reflection

The whole trick to restoring First Peak is to improve the wave reflection. The reflected waves create what surfers call “wedge waves.” Therefore, we need to capture days when wedge waves are present. This way we can correlate the reflected wave energy to our on-going worm reef monitoring program. We are hoping to show the relationship between reflected wave energy and the quality of First Peak. If you see a wedge capture it.

Surfer Demographics

By taking pictures with Surf Guru, we can document how many surfers are catching waves at First Peak. We want to compare these surfers to those surfing down the beach and other waves at Sebastian Inlet.

Monthly Monitoring Contest

Now that you’ve taking some pictures with the Surf Guru surf cam it’s time to upload them to our photo contest.  All the pictures you take of First Peak goes towards our monitoring efforts.  Each month we’ll pick the best photo and the photographer gets a cool prize.  You can upload your monitoring photos and enter the contest by clicking the link below.

Become a First Peak Surf Guru

This is all good stuff. By helping us capture screenshots of First Peak using the technology provided to us by our partners, we’re getting that much closer to bringing back the peak. Share you pictures on social media and now we have a proper community driven monitoring program on our hands.
